Scammers Claiming To Be Law Officers Demand Payment

Le Mars, Iowa — Scammers continue to prey on northwest Iowa residents. The latest scam is one in which the scammer claims to be with law enforcement.

The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office reports that on Monday evening, February 25th, 2019, they received a call from a resident stating that a caller had called this victim, claiming to be from the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office, and claiming that they had a bench warrant for the victim’s arrest. The sheriff’s office says an additional resident also received a call from someone claiming to be a deputy with the Plymouth County Sheriffs Office.

They tell us that the scammer tells potential victims to get them gift cards to forgive the warrant. They also claim that there are warrants for failure to appear for jury duty. They report that the scammer also requests the victim to go to a local store for PayPal or other ways to take care of the alleged crime.

The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office tells us they do not ask for gift cards, personal information, or payments to take care of fines or warrants. If you receive a call like this they ask you to call your local law enforcement agency.
