Schiebout Sentenced To Up To 15-Years In Prison

Orange City, Iowa — A Sioux Center woman has been sentenced to up to 15-years in prison on a narcotics charge, and immediately posted an appeal bond to gain her freedom pending an appeal of the case.

According to the Sioux County Attorney’s Office, the case against Kamie Jo Schiebout arose from an incident in May of last year, when police responded to First Reformed Church after they received a report that Schiebout, who had an active warrant for an unrelated theft, was in Orange City. Deputies located and arrested Schiebout who, they say, then attempted to distance herself from her purse. Deputies say they knew Schiebout had a history with controlled substances, and believed the purse contained methamphetamine. Deputies seized the purse and deployed a trained narcotics K9 who indicated the purse contained narcotics. Deputies then obtained a search warrant for the purse, which they say contained pipes, marijuana, methamphetamine, baggies used in drug distribution, and other drug paraphernalia.

Authorities say Schiebout was sentenced to up to 15-years in prison for Possession of Methamphetamine, 3rd Offense, as a Habitual Offender. Schiebout immediately posted a $5-thousand appeal bond which postpones her sentence until her appeal is complete.

Schiebout made news earlier this year when she was sentenced to 15-years in prison on a Theft charge. Sioux County Attorney Thomas Kunstle says the January sentence was for Theft in the 2nd Degree as a Habitual Offender. Kunstle says that case dates back to November, 2015 when Sioux Center and Orange City police received reports that several books of blank checks had been stolen. According to Kunstle, an investigation revealed Schiebout had stolen the checks  and been using them to obtain goods and services.

As she did is the narcotics case Tuesday, Schiebout immediately posted an Appeal Bond in the January conviction, and remains free pending the outcome of her appeal.

Kunstle tells KIWA that the appeals process usually takes approximately 16-months to be completed.
