Sheldon, Iowa — This week the City of Sheldon is seal coating some of its roads to further preserve them and keep them in a working order.
Provided above is a chart of where the sealing will be taking place. The work started today, Tuesday, August, 4th. The Public Works Director of Sheldon, Todd Uhl gives us a bit more information on what Seal Coating is.
(as said) “Yeah so chip sealing is just a maintenance technique utilized on asphalt, we’re getting to the point where we’ve got some roads that are starting to deteriorate but they are not to the point of needing a complete resurface yet, so we are trying to extend their lives by utilizing chip seal.”
This work is scheduled to be completed by Thursday, August 6th at 6 pm. The City of Sheldon asks that traffic avoid these areas if possible and that residents do not park on these streets during this timeframe.
The following roads are being worked on: Second Avenue from Highway 18 to Ninth Street, Washington Avenue from Highway 18 to Pleasant Court, Ninth Street from Washington Avenue to Eighth Avenue, and Eleventh Street from Sixth Avenue to Eighth Avenue.
(as said) “They were roads that would benefit from the process. We have more roads and we’ll likely do some more again next year.”
Uhl says this is a good way to maintain roads without having to do a full reconstruction.
(as said) It’s a process that Sheldon hasn’t utilized in a number of years,” Uhl says. “But it’s a process that we’re gonna start bringing back, and it’s an economical way to extend the life of asphalt pavement.”
More information will become available for future plans on Chip Sealing. Please contact the Sheldon City Offices at 712-324-4651 if you have questions or concerns.
