Northwest Iowa — Tomorrow is the day…Primary Election Day in Iowa, and there are several contested races around the area.
In O’Brien County, the contested county races include the Supervisor District 4 seat, where Dennis Vanden Hull is challenging incumbent Tom Farnnsworth in the Republican Primary. In Supervisor District 5, Incumbent Dan Friedrichsen is being challenged by Dennis Fogelman. No Democrats or Libertarian Party candidates appear on the O’Brien County Ballot in contested races.
In Sioux County, there are three contested county-government races. For County Recorder, Kathryn Winter, Jessica Kooiker and Kathleen Mulder are in a 3-way race for the Republican nomination. In Sioux County District 2, Supervisor candidates are Arlyn Kleinwolterink and Jerry Mullenberg. In District 4, five people are seeking the Republican nomination for Supervisor. They are Ken Nielsen, Ted Salazar, Warren Vander Pol, Carl Vande Weerd, and Howard J. Van Ginkel. No Democrat or Libertarian candidates appear on the ballot for contested County offices in Sioux County.
In Osceola County there is one contested race on the Republican ticket. For Supervisor District 1, Rochelle Buckman and LeRoy E. De Boer are vying for the nominaton. There are no Osceola County contested races that feature either a Libertarian or Democrat candidate.
There are some contested elections in Lyon County this primary season. In the Republican primary for Lyon County Attorney, Melinda Folkens is running against Shayne Mayer. Also on the Republican ballot, Joshua Feucht, Randy Simons, and Chris Viereck are all seeking to become County Supervisor for District 1. In Lyon County District 4, Jerry Birkey and Randy Bosch both appear on the Republican ballot. In Lyon County District 5, Steve Herman and Kirk Peters are both vying for that position on the Republican ticket. Much like the otehr three counties in our area, there are no Democrats or Libertarian candidates in contested races in Lyon County.
In state-wide races, there are a few contested races. In the Republican primary for U.S. House, District 4, incumbent Steve King is facing a primary challenge from Cyndi Hanson. On the Democrat ballot, a trio of candidates are lined up for a chance to run for the House this fall. They include, Leann Jacobsen, John Paschen, and J.D. Schouten.
In the race to become Iowa’s Governor, Democrats Nate Boulton, Cathy Glasson, Fred Hubbel, Andrea Andy McGuire, John Norris, and Ross Wilburn are vying for the chance to face imcumbent Republican Governor Kim Reynolds in November’s General Election. Two names will appear on the Libertarian Party’s ballot Tuesday. Jake Porter is facing Marco Battaglia for the right to run in the General Election in November. Incumbent Governor Kim Reynolds is running unopposed in Tuesday’s Republican Primary.
Another contested race on the Republican ballot finds Brad Price, Zach Whiting and Jesse Wolfe all seeking the nomination for the Iowa District 1 Senate seat. No Democrats have filed for that seat, and imcumbent Independent Senator David Johnson announced last week that he will not seek reelection.
Polls will be open Tuesday from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm. KIWA will have election results on-air, and online as soon as they become available Tuesday night.
