Severe Weather Rumbles Through Early Friday

Northwest Iowa — Some severe weather rumbled through northwest Iowa early on Friday morning.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued by the National Weather Service for locations in and close to our area. Meteorologist Alex Trellinger with the Sioux Falls office tells us about it.

(as said:) “We did have a number of severe thunderstorm warnings issued for the area of northwestern Iowa and also southwestern Minnesota. One of the biggest things we saw with this event was actually the wind. We do have a couple of reports of wind damage — a roof off of a hog farm, a couple big trees uprooted — I’m talking like trees that are two foot in diameter some were snapped. We did get reports of closer toward north of Worthington where the utility company reported that they had nine power lines snapped as well at the base. It also gets some hail. We did find multiple reports of one-inch hail in the O’Brien and Osceola county area, but the largest hail we found — or was reported to us at least — was 2.5 inches down in Storm Lake.

The nearby strong wind reports come from Hawarden, Worthington, and Arnolds Park.

Trellinger says while we could get some thunderstorms this Saturday night, he doesn’t think they’re much of a threat.

(as said:) “For northwestern Iowa, the chances are very slim that you might see any severe weather. The best chances are going to be occurring west of the James River valley. So that could be occurring afternoon into the overnight hours into Sunday morning. Better chances are off to the west. Northwestern Iowa shouldn’t see a big threat for this. So hopefully they will be spared from severe weather.”
