Sheldon Council Approves Demolition Company’s Plan For ThermoCel Building

Sheldon, Iowa — After getting approval from the Sheldon City Council, the demolition company tasked with taking down the old ThermoCel building will begin work in October of this year. The council gave their approval to discharge the 200,000 gallons of water in the basement of the building into the city’s sanitary sewer system. The city will be paid $4.44 for each thousand gallons of water. Sheldon City Manager Sam Kooiker told the council that this is one-and-one-half times the rate a residential user would have to pay for such a discharge.

The Council also heard from Brenda Collier representing Upper Des Moines Opportunity. She expressed her thanks for the support that has been given to needy O’Brien county residents during the Covid-19 pandemic. She noted that in the months of March through July, UDMO has distributed food to 225 Sheldon families.

And, the city has received  a letter from the union representing the city’s employees, asking for a one-year extension of their contract. The council will take up the matter at their next regular meeting.
