Sheldon Council Talks Street Closure, New Hotel

Sheldon, Iowa — When the Sheldon City Council met in regular session Wednesday, they held a public hearing on a request to temporarily close a one-block section of 7th Street.

City Manager Sam Kooiker says the request is to close the section of 7th Street from 6th Avenue to 7th Avenue.

Bethel Reformed Church sustained substantial damage due to a fire inside the building in September 2016, and has been unusable since that time. Tentative plans for the site of the church building and its east parking lot are for the property to be developed for new residential housing.

O’Brien County EMA Coordinator Jared Johnson updated the Council on the Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan. Kooiker says the Council held a public hearing on that plan at Wednesday’s meeting.

In other action, the Council approved a resolution to help facilitate the construction of a new hotel near the Crossroads Pavilion Event Center. City Development Director Curt Strouth says the Cobblestone Inn and Suites project had been approved more than a year ago.

During Wednesday’s meeting, Strouth says the Council approved a discounted price for the sale of the land upon which the facility will be located.

Strouth says the Cobblestone Inn and Suites will be located between the Holiday Inn Express on the north, and the Crossroads Pavilion Event Center to the south. He says construction is scheduled to begin within the next thirty to sixty days.
