Sheldon Fire Company Eyes Future Building Needs; New SCDC Director May Not Be City Employee

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council met in regular session on Wednesday afternoon, September 6th.

In the public participation section of the meeting, Daryl Mouw of Sheldon asked the council why the Sheldon Community School District was not required to install sidewalks when, according to him, other property owners are required to install them. City Manager Sam Kooiker told Mouw he would get back to him on that.

Kooiker highlights some of the things the council did at the meeting.

Fire Chief Hindt also mentioned that the Sheldon Fire Company is talking with the other emergency services about future facility needs. Kooiker says they’re just starting to talk about what construction might be needed in the future, and where the funding might come from.

Kooiker tells us they are working on updating the City’s urban renewal plan, and one of the ideas behind that update would be to facilitate the funding of potential emergency services building upgrades.

Another item being discussed as part of the updates to the urban renewal plan is how the SCDC is funded.

Kooiker says if that goes through, money to pay the new SCDC Director would continue to come from the City, but the SCDC Director would not be a City employee, but an employee of the SCDC Board, like the Chamber Director and Administrative Assistant are now. Of course, the director would continue to work closely with the City, the City would have to approve the director, and the SCDC Board will continue to have two City Council members on it.

Kooiker says the funding piece would have to come through a public hearing. He says he was just bringing the Council up to date on what the thought was at this time.
