Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon Police Department is one of 183 law enforcement agencies from across the nation receiving a COPS Grant from the United States Department of Justice.
Sheldon’s grant is in the amount of $125,000, which will be used to add an additional full-time police officer to the current roster of 7 full-time officers.
The funding for the COPS Grants comes through the Department of Justice Community Oriented Policing Services, or COPS, Office, COPS Hiring Program, or CHP. The awards, which totaled $139,000,000 nationwide, provide direct funding to 183 law enforcement agencies across the nation, allowing those agencies to hire 1,066 additional full-time law enforcement professionals.
CHP is a competitive award program intended to reduce crime and advance public safety through community policing.
There were only two Iowa cities to be approved for COPS Grants this year. In addition to Sheldon’s $125,000 grant, the City of Dysart, in east-central Iowa, also received a $125,000 COPS Grant.
