Sheldon, Iowa — A Sheldon woman came close to losing $16-hundred in a recent scam attempt.
According to Sheldon Police Chief Lyle Bolkema, the woman was chatting with someone she has known for several years, on an internet app called hookup. Bolkema says this person informed her that he was working for a major oil company and was in Norway. He reportedly requested she send him $16-hundred for supplies and equipment, and directed her to send $16-hundred cash to an address in Georgia.
Bolkema says the woman attempted to FedEx the money overnight priority at Super Hi Tech in Sheldon on July 18th. He says the employees of the business recognized that this was a scam and contacted the police department.
Bolkema says the money was returned to the woman after it was explained to her that she was being scammed. He says it was learned that she did not even have a phone number to contact the man whom she claimed is her friend.
Bolkema says it was also learned that earlier this year, the same woman had lost $200 by purchasing an I-tunes card, revealing the numbers from the card, and sending that information to someone else.
