Sioux County, Iowa — The dedication was made and the ribbon cut Wednesday morning on the new $32-million Sioux County Regional Airport near Maurice.
Various dignitaries spoke to the crowd gathered for the event, which was much larger than organizers had predicted. Harold Schiebout, the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the airport said they had originally set up three hundred chairs, then decided to add another one hundred. All those seats were filled, with well over one hundred more people standing around the outside perimeter of the new hangar in which the ceremony was held.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds spoke to the crowd, telling them she was glad to be in Sioux County, surrounded by people who stepped into growth.
Reynolds said the people of Sioux County have “accomplished a great project.”
She reminded the crowd that Iowa is a production-based economy that relies on dependable transportation.
Another of the speakers at the dedication ceremony was Joe Miniace of the Federal Aviation Administration, who made a presentation to Schiebout.
Mark Vogel of Diamond Vogel in Orange City spoke to the need for the new airport, comparing the facilities to internet access.
The Keynote Speaker for the event was Dennis Muilenburg, Chairman, President and CEO of Boeing, who grew up, he told the crowd, on a farm about a mile north of the new airport, which is located at the southeast corner of the Highway 10 and 75 intersection. Muilenburg joked about what locals call that intersection.
Following the dedication ceremony, the ribbon was cut on the new facility, and those attending were treated to lunch and self-guided tours of the facilities at the new Sioux County Regional Airport.
