Sheldon, Iowa — Retired pastor Ken Snyder was the winner of Tuesday’s special election to fill the unexpired term of former Sheldon 2nd Ward City Councilman Shawn Broesder.
O’Brien County Auditor Barb Rohwer tells KIWA that Snyder received 84 votes at the polls, plus an additional 5 absentee votes, for a total of 89. Sandra Johnson received 21 votes at the polls, plus 2 absentee votes for a total of 23. Madeline Kopel received 8 votes at the polls with no absentee votes. In addition, Rohwer says there were 2 provisional votes cast, one from a voter who had returned their absentee ballot to the Auditor’s Office without signing it and another who failed to bring their ID with them to the polls. Rohwer says the Provisional Committee will be taking a look at both of those ballots, but together they aren’t enough to alter the outcome of the election.
Councilman-Elect Ken Snyder talked to KIWA and took the opportunity to thank all those who voted for him.
Rohwer says 11.74% of the 2nd Ward’s registered voters cast a ballot in Tuesday’s special election, a big increase over voter turnout from that ward in the last regular election. Snyder says he was pleased to see that increased voter turnout.
Snyder says he has no agenda when he takes office next week.
He relates a phone call he received from a constituent following his election.
The vote totals from Tuesday’s election are unofficial until they’re canvassed by the O’Brien County Board of Supervisors at their next meeting, which is next Tuesday, June 15th. The very next day, Wednesday June 16th, Snyder will take the oath of office at the beginning of the regular Sheldon City Council meeting, then be seated on the Council.

Vote totals show Snyder winning the seat with 89 votes, of the 120 votes cast including 7 absentee ballots.. Sandra Johnson finished in 2nd with 23 votes. Madeline Kopel receiving 8 votes.
These vote totals are unofficial and won’t become official until next Tuesday, June 15th, when they are canvassed by the O’Brien County Board of Supervisors.
Snyder will take the Oath of Office as Sheldon’s 2nd Ward Councilman at the beginning of the Wednesday, June 16th meeting of the Sheldon City Council and will take his seat on the Council at that time.
Snyder will fill the unexpired term of former Councilman Shawn Broesder, who resigned the 2nd Ward seat earlier this year. The term runs through the end of this year. To retain his seat, Snyder would need to run again in this November’s regular election.
The Sheldon City Council had originally intended to appoint someone to fill the 2nd Ward seat, however a petition from 2nd Ward residents was filed which forced the special election.
