Sophomores From Four High Schools Experience Sixth Annual O’Brien County Career Day

Sheldon, Iowa — Sophomores from four area high schools converged on Northwest Iowa Community College Friday for the sixth annual O’Brien County Career Day.

The day included sophomores from Sheldon, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, South O’Brien, and Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn-Remsen Union high schools experiencing presentations from O’Brien County businesses Rosenboom Machine & Tool, Mill Creek Machining, Maintainer, AgriVision, Ziegler Cat, C-S Agrow, White Wolf Web, JTV, DK Plastics, and Sanford Health, both for careers in EMS and at the hospital. The students heard from the companies about the many career opportunities here in O’Brien County that are available after graduation from high school and college. In fact, they were able to see – firsthand – some of the careers. Organizers tell us that talented workforce recruitment has become a strategic priority for O’Brien County Career Day.

There were 14 booths at the career fair part of the experience, with many unique opportunities from “Plinko-style” games, to smores being made, from spray-paint simulators to contests on assembling and disassembling model cylinders to get a shirt, a ball cap, and other items.

Lunch with scholarship awards and door prizes was at Northwest Iowa Community College’s Lifelong Learning and Recreation Center (LLRC). The students also participated in a Business Hub and took part in panel discussions talking about a number of locally-available career opportunities.

The 2023 O’Brien County Career Day for sophomores was made possible through a partnership among the O’Brien County Economic Development Corporation, the Sheldon Chamber & Development Corporation, Northwest Iowa Community College, and Iowa State University Extension & Outreach.
