Spirit Lake Man Will Be Evaluated For Competency Before Murder Trial

Spirit Lake, Iowa — A Spirit Lake man is to be evaluated for competency to stand trial in a case in which he is accused of shooting his former girlfriend to death in Milford.

25-year-old Christian Goyne-Yarns entered a written plea of not guilty to 1st Degree Murder in Dickinson County court this spring. He’s accused of shooting Shelby Woizeschke multiple times on February 3rd outside GrapeTree Medical Staffing in Milford, where she was employed.

Police say Woizeschke was able to call 911 and identify her attacker. She died a few days later in a Sioux Falls hospital.

Authorities say Goyne-Yarns was arrested without incident within about an hour of the attack and charged with Attempted Murder. That charge was upgraded to 1st Degree Murder after Woizeschke’s death.

Defense attorneys requested that Goyne-Yarns undergo a competency evaluation early last week. The judge in the case granted the request on Thursday. The trial was to have been August 16th, but that has now been “continued,” which is a legal word meaning “postponed.”
