State Jazz Choir Festival Is Monday In Spirit Lake

Choir 3Spirit Lake, Iowa — Another week, another festival for the Sheldon High School Vocal Department.  On the heels of this past Monday’s performance at the State Show Choir Festival in Sioux Center, Sheldon singers will be among musicians from twelve northwest Iowa high schools performing in the Iowa High School Music Association State Jazz Choir Festival this coming Monday (Feb 6th) in Spirit Lake.

Sheldon High School Vocal Music Instructor Brett Gregory says that while his Jazz Choir will be seeking a score, or rating, the choirs involved are not competing against each other.

Gregory tells us how the choirs are judged.

He says the Orab Jazz Choir is made up of more than just vocalists.

Gregory says these contests are a great opportunity to get feedback from impartial judges.

In addition to Sheldon, jazz choirs from Central Lyon, Lawton-Bronson, South O’Brien, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, Akron-Westfield, West Lyon, Sibley-Ocheyedan, Okoboji, and the host school, Spirit Lake will all be taking part.

Monday’s Iowa High School Music Association State Jazz Choir Festival will begin at 1:30 Monday afternoon when the Central Lyon Jazz Choir takes to the stage, and will continue throughout the afternoon and evening, culminating with a performance by the Spirit Lake Jazz Choir at 9:20 Monday evening.  The festival will be held in the Sami Bedell Performing Arts Center in Spirit Lake, and is open to the public.  Admission is $6 for adults, and $3 for students in K-12.
