Storms Rumble Through Area Monday Night

Northwest Iowa — Thunderstorms packing high winds and heavy rains rumbled through a narrow area of the broadcast area Monday night, with spotty amounts of rainfall over most of the area.

The severe portions of the storms came in a band narrow enough that 4-inches of rain fell south of George during the storm, while residents in the northern part of town reported 0.88-inches. A trained weather spotter 3 miles west-southwest of George reported a wind gust out of the east at 60 miles per hour at about 7:40 Monday evening. Meanwhile, further northwest in Lyon County, at Rock Rapids, just 0.06-inches of rain fell.

In Osceola County, at 8:03 Monday evening a trained spotter at Ashton reported  several 6-inch diameter tree branches broken by wind gusts. Two minutes later, at 8:05 pm, the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls received a report of 6 to 8-inch diameter tree branches broken by thunderstorm winds in Sibley. At the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office in Sibley, they report 0.7 inches of rain during the storm.

Although O’Brien County was under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning, just 0.22-inches of rain fell in Sheldon.

We’ve received no reports from Sioux County.
