Tips To Keep Water Pipes From Freezing In Subzero Conditions

Sheldon, Iowa — With the bitterly cold temperatures we’ve been experiencing, some area residents may be having trouble with water pipes freezing. We talked to Sheldon Public Works Director Todd Uhl about some ways to prevent frozen pipes.

Uhl says there are two types of frozen pipes. The first occurs when there is a deep frost, causing service lines that bring the water into your house, to freeze.

He says the second type involves pipes freezing inside your home. This normally happens when water pipes are against an insufficiently insulated outer wall. Uhl says there are a couple of things that you can do to prevent that situation.

Uhl cautions that, in order to be effective at preventing frozen pipes, your faucets don’t need to be left running at full strength.

He says the best course of action for preventing the pipes inside your home from freezing takes place in the fall, when you inspect your home to make sure that there are no places in your home that allow cold air to come into contact with your water pipes.
