UPDATE: Fire Department Called To Purina Feed Mill

Sheldon, Iowa — Firefighters from two departments answered the call of a structure fire in Sheldon last evening (Wednesday, December 27th).

Sheldon Assistant Fire Chief Randy Harms says his department was paged at 6:03 last evening to a reported structure fire at 105 West 8th Street, the Land-O-Lakes Purina feed mill.

Harms says when fire crews arrived they were advised there was a fire in the basement, as well as in a bag house at the top of the structure.

The Sanborn Fire Department was called to assist Sheldon firefighters in putting out the fires.

Harms tells KIWA the basement fire was extinguished first, then the fire in the bag house was extinguished. He says it was then determined that a bin also contained smoldering product, which was dumped and hauled away from the area.

A bearing in the blower assembly is believed to have started the fire, according to Harms. He says there were no injuries in the incident.

The Sheldon Fire Company was assisted at the scene by the Sanborn Fire Department, O’Brien County Emergency Management, Sheldon EMA, and the Sheldon Ambulance Team.

Firefighters were on scene until shortly after 10:00 pm.
