Influenza Cases Just Starting To Pop Up In Northwest Iowa

Sheldon, Iowa — It seems like more and more people are getting sick in northwest Iowa. And people often wonder if it’s “the flu.”

We got the real information from Sanford Sheldon physician Dr. Amy Badberg.

But she says most flu cases have been mild.

Dr. Badberg says there have also been some cases of what people call “stomach flu,” which isn’t really influenza.

She says while they haven’t had a large number of flu cases, they are seeing an influx of sick people, due to people being inside more and being with more people than normal.

She reminds us that while they can prescribe antibiotics for bacterial infections, there aren’t a whole lot of medical options for viral infections.

She says they’ve also seen some recent cases of strep throat, which, since it’s a bacteria, can be treated with an antibiotic.
