Trooper Talks Distracted Driving

Sheldon, Iowa — April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, a time to take stock of your driving habits, and how they could be improved.

Iowa State Patrol Trooper Vince Kurtz says troopers won’t be doing much in the way of “extra” distracted driver enforcement this month.

As of last July 1st, Distracted Driving became a “Primary Traffic Offense”. Kurtz explains.

Trooper Kurtz says the new law has helped reduce distracted driving.

He says the Iowa State Patrol is being creative in the way they enforce the Distracted Driving Law.

Kurtz says distracted driving encompasses more than just texting while you drive, it also includes use of social media, web browsing, and emailing. He says that drivers 18 and older are still allowed to use handheld cell phones for phone calls.
