Primghar, Iowa — The second annual Back-To-School Bash was held on Friday at the Upper Des Moines Opportunity office in Primghar.
Upper Des Moines Outreach Specialist Brenda Collier tells us about the program.
(as said:) “Last year, we started a back to school program where the kiddos would receive a backpack full of their supplies to start the school year. Last year we put 350 backpacks on kids in O’Brien County and this year because of COVID, we only were able to put 250 backpacks on kids in O’Brien County.”
She tells us how it works.
(as said:) “We sent out 350 applications earlier this month and they would fill the application out and then we would look over their income and then we would send them a postcard letting them know that they qualified and that they would come to the office from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the 24th.”
She says the backpacks were customized for students from every school district in the county with the specific supplies they need, according to their school’s list. She says they help students in all grades from preschool through twelfth grade.
Collier puts out an appeal to O’Brien County families with school-aged kids.
(as said:) “If there are kids still in need of school supplies, they are welcome to call my office and go over the application process and we can provide school supplies for them as well.”
