Sheldon, Iowa — If you’re asking yourself, “Hm, I wonder why they cut down those big beautiful cottonwoods in Sheldon’s Hills Park?” Here’s an answer for you.
It was necessary. That from Sheldon Public Works Director Todd Uhl. As you can see, there is a large void in the middle of the tree, compromising the safety of the tree. Uhl says, “Seeing trees in this condition certainly made it easier to remove as many as we did.”
A social media post from the City of Sheldon stated, “We have been removing a large number of trees from our parks. Hills Park certainly looks different today than it did a couple of weeks ago. While we don’t take pleasure in this process it is unfortunately necessary. We are seeing ash trees declining in health and the big cottonwoods at Hills Park were dangerous. We removed several cottonwoods that were in this condition. We will miss the shade that these trees provided but we feel better knowing that our park is now a safer place for the public.”
