Village Northwest Unlimited Announces Recipient of Spirit of Caring Scholarship

Sheldon, Iowa — A Sheldon High School student has received an annual scholarship from Village Northwest Unlimited in Sheldon.

According to Village officials, the 2021 recipient of the Linda K. De Groot/Village Northwest Unlimited Spirit of Caring Scholarship is Keeley Simonsen from Sheldon High School. They tell us Simonsen will be attending South Dakota State University and will be studying Exercise Science to one day become a physical therapist. Simonsen was chosen from applications received from Sheldon High School seniors. Simonsen is the daughter of Scott and Kristi Simonsen of Sheldon.

Village officials tell us the Linda K. De Groot/Village Northwest Unlimited Spirit of Caring Scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship given to a graduating senior from Sheldon High School who will be entering into a career field that focuses on working with individuals who have disabilities. De Groot was the Director of Public Relations and Business Development at Village Northwest Unlimited and they tell us she was a valuable employee of the Village for over 20 years. De Groot lost her battle with cancer in 2006. Village officials say the scholarship provides an opportunity to honor and sustain the legacy of caring that Linda exemplified every day and encourage young people to pursue a career that makes a difference in the life of a person with a disability.
