Sheldon, Iowa — Warmer temperatures over the next week or so will mean a lot of melting weather. But while that normally means wet, sloppy conditions with the potential for flooding, this time the risk of flooding is pretty low, according to National Weather Service officials.
We talked to weather service hydrologist Mike Gillispie about it.
Gillispie tells us the snow pack is insignificant for two reasons.
That’s good news for farmers and basements across northwest Iowa. Gillispie says southwest Minnesota and southeast South Dakota have the same situation, so that should mean very little river flooding potential as well.
We asked Gillispie if he could “peer into his crystal ball” and give us the precipitation potential for the next few weeks and months.
Gillispie does say though that with these higher temperatures, the rivers may start flowing again in some areas, and ice jams could cause localized flooding over the next week or two.
