Warmer Temps, Less Snow, More Total Precip Seen In March This Year

Sheldon, Iowa — Warmer and wetter than normal. That pretty much sums up the weather in Sheldon during the month of March.

Even though we had more precipitation than normal last month, we had LESS of that moisture coming in the form of snowfall.

Precipitation, including rainfall amounts and the amount of moisture contained in melted snow each day, was 2.67-inches during March in Sheldon, that’s an increase of 0.3-inches from March of last year and an increase of 0.71-inches in a normal March. Snowfall in March totaled 7-inches, which is 1.7-inches below the snowfall total for a normal March, according to official National Weather Service records.

March 2020 was slightly warmer than the year before, reaching an average high temperature of 49-degrees, which is four degrees warmer than the previous March and 6-degrees warmer than normal for March. The month’s warmest temperature was recorded on March 10th, when the thermometer topped out at 68-degrees. That temperature also tied the record high for that date. It hadn’t been that warm on a March 10th since 1967.

Our low temperatures were warmer than a year ago, as well. Sheldon’s average low temperature last month was28-degrees, which is some 6-degrees warmer than a normal March and two degrees warmer than March 2020.
