Wastewater Treatment Plant Comes In Under Budget

Sheldon, Iowa — Since the cost of the recently completed Sheldon Wastewater Treatment Plant came in under budget, funds are available for two critical planned wastewater lift station projects. Both of which have outlived their service life and are in need of replacement. One is located next to Thorman Avenue in the front yard of the existing homeowner. The plan is to relocate this lift station to the adjacent lot to the east.  The other is the NCC lift station. The City Council will get an update on the projects when they meet this Wednesday July 15th.

The Council will also hear another request to keep poultry within the city limits. According to City Code, it is unlawful for a person to keep livestock within the City except by written consent of the council, or except in compliance with the City’s zoning regulations. Recently the council granted permission, with some limitations, in response to a request to keep chickens in the city limits. Now, the city has received a letter from 8-year-old Bailey Van Engen who is moving from a farm to 1014 Garfield Avenue.  She has 3 laying hens and no roosters as part of a 4-H project. Van Engen says the nearest neighbors ‘don’t care’ if she has the chickens in town.

In other business, the Council will consider their options on rentals of the rooms in the Community Services Center. Recently the City has encouraged rental of the Crossroads Pavilion since it provides more room for social distancing.

The council will also hear an update on the situation with the former Rec Bowl property. And they are expected to confirm reappointments of Melissa Remme, Stan Ten Kley and Sandy Kamphoff to the Trails committee, confirm the appointment of Sara Eldrige and reappointment of Glen Goedken to the Cemetery Board, and accept the retirement notice from P & Z  Commissioner Jay Schemper.

Wednesday’s meeting begins at 4:30 in the upper level of the Sheldon Community Services Center.
