Hull, Iowa — The second semester is well underway at area high schools. One of the area schools has been trying out a couple of new things since the beginning of the school year.
We had a chance to catch up with Western Christian principal, Mr. Dan Barkel. One of the things that they’re getting used to this year is opting out of the federal Hot Lunch Program. Barkel says it was just too restrictive. He says things seem to be going well on their own for lunch.
Barkel says there were a lot of restrictions on what products they may serve in what amounts.
He says they’re watching costs closely, but so far it appears to be working out.
He says he’s not sure their steps would work at every school, but they seem to be working for them.
Western Christian students also started school in a different environment. A $7 million project to remodel and renovate the science wing, create a space for a new vocational agriculture room, renovate the old gym into an event center and add a new entry was completed last year.
