Sheldon, Iowa — The City of Sheldon is gearing up for the annual cleanup week, and you can buy your virtual flag now.
In recent history, cleanup days used to be in the spring, but after the event needed to be moved to the fall due to COVID, it has become an autumn event instead. City officials tell us that the annual cleanup allows people to get rid of several kinds of things in exchange for the purchase of a $15 virtual “flag,” with electronics and appliances requiring an additional $15 sticker. (physical wire flags are no longer used)
Other items that may be disposed of include items made of metal, tree branches or brush, and furniture, to name a few.
We talked to Sheldon City Manager Sam Kooiker, and he tells us about it.
City officials are asking to not place anything curbside earlier than Friday evening, September 15. No items will be picked up on the alleys. After the city crew goes past your house, you will not be allowed to deposit more items. Trees/brush and appliances/electronics may be picked up separately. Please do not place your items next to your regularly used recycle or garbage can.
They also remind you that salvaging is part of the tradition, so don’t be surprised if your items are gone after you set them out. They say that also helps the City.
City officials tell us no hazardous materials, toxic materials, or liquids of any kind will be picked up. They remind us that state guidelines classify batteries, paint, thinner, stains, gas, oil, insecticides, pesticides, etc. as hazardous or toxic waste. They will also not accept tires or batteries, roofing or large piles of demolition material, garbage, grass trimmings or leaves, or concrete or brick.
If you have those kinds of things to get rid of, you can call the Northwest Iowa Solid Waste Agency at 324-4026 for assistance. There may be a fee involved. Also, the Sheldon Fire Company will be hosting the Household Hazardous Materials Trailer in September. The time has been set for Tuesday, September 12 from 3 to 6 pm at the south end of the Community Services Center parking lot, just north of the Library. Household Hazardous Materials may be taken any time to the Landfill’s “Swap Shop”. Here is the link: Swap Shop – Northwest Iowa Landfill (nwialandfill.com).
