Northwest Iowa — The planting season is down to just a few more trips across the field, and the northwest district’s progress is much in line with the rest of the state.
The USDA crop report for the statewide average shows 98 percent of the corn crop is planted, eight days ahead of last year and 11 days ahead of the five-year average.
Eighty-five percent of the corn crop has emerged, with 77 percent reported in good to excellent condition.
Ninety-four percent of soybeans had been planted by Sunday, more than one week ahead of last year and 15 days ahead of normal.
Sixty-seven percent of soybeans have emerged and the first condition report shows 71 percent are rated in good to excellent condition.
In the northwest Iowa district, for the most part, it has been fairly aligned with the state average. The district does have a notable deficiency in 1st cutting of alfalfa hay, at 38 percent for the district, compared to the state’s 52 percent. The district also is lagging the state substantially in oats headed, coming in at only eight percent, whereas the state’s percentage of oats headed more than doubles that at 21 percent.
The state had more than half a day more suitable for field work, according to the report, at 6.6 days, compared to the northwest district at 6 days.
