(KIWA Staff Photo)Spencer, Iowa (RI) — Eleven months after Clay County voters approved an Emergency Medical Services levy, county officials are working on the next step: designing a bidding process to ensure round-the-clock ambulance coverage for rural residents.
Board of Supervisors Chairman Barry Anderson says Spencer Hospital’s ambulance service currently coordinates with rural EMS volunteers when emergencies occur, but the county wants a more formal system supported by the new levy.
Anderson says county officials will meet later this month to design the document for bidders seeking to operate an ambulance service funded by the levy, which is projected to raise nearly $1 million per year.
Clay County is one of 21 Iowa counties that have approved EMS levies to improve emergency response time in rural areas.
