Des Moines, Iowa (RI) — Democrats in the Iowa House say lawmakers should address other issues besides a proposed incentive package for a steel mill during Friday’s special legislative session.

Rep. Adam Zabner of Iowa City says House Democrats earlier this year proposed a $1,000 property tax rebate for homeowners and a $500 rebate for renters.

State Rep. Josh Turek, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, suggested lawmakers could also consider a temporary suspension of Iowa’s gas tax.

However, Gov. Kim Reynolds’ issued a proclamation for Friday’s special session, with the sole purpose to consider a deal that would provide about $1.4 billion in tax incentives for an Indian company planning to build a steel mill in Lee County.
