Des Moines, Iowa (RI) — Lawmakers met privately for the first several hours of Friday’s special legislative session.

Gov. Kim Reynolds called the Iowa House and Senate into session to consider tax incentives for an Indian company that plans to build a steel mill in southeast Iowa.

Senate Democratic Leader Janice Weiner says lawmakers are moving too quickly to approve the proposal.

The company plans to build the steel complex in Lee County and has projected that operations would begin in 2030.

The Senate convened shortly after 9 a.m. for what is formally known as an extraordinary session.

The House convened at about 11 a.m.
