Engineer: Work On B40 Between Hospers & Sioux Center Hoped To Be Done By End Of June

Orange City, Iowa (SCR) — Several key county roads in Sioux County are under major construction, as engineers prepare for long-term improvements and flood-related repairs.

Sioux County Engineer Joel Sikkema says the largest project is a concrete overlay on B40, the road heading west from Highway 60 at Hospers toward Sioux Center. The work is between K64 and Hospers.

Sikkema says the project is significantly extending the life of the road.

He says concrete overlays have proven to be effective for the county and are commonly used across Iowa.

Sikkema says he expects that the B40 project will be completed by the end of June. He says they’re making great progress on mainline paving. After that, he says they’ll be working on paving intersections and building up the shoulders and sideroads.

In addition to the B40 project, Sioux County is also replacing two bridges northwest of Rock Valley that were damaged during the 2024 flood. Sikkema says those bridge projects have taken longer to move forward due to the approval process through FEMA.

The B40 concrete overlay is expected to cost about $3 million, while the two bridge replacements are projected at approximately $900,000 and $800,000, respectively.

Sikkema says Sioux County typically spends around $10 million per year on road maintenance and improvements, and these projects represent some of the most significant work planned for the construction season.
