Rock Valley, Iowa (Sioux County Radio) — Iowans can now purchase federal flood insurance entirely online, a new option that comes as Rock Valley continues recovering from the devastating June 2024 flood.
FEMA announced Tuesday that the National Flood Insurance Program now offers an online purchasing tool through FloodSmart.gov. The option is available in nearly 22,700 communities nationwide that participate in the program.
How the Online Option Works
According to FEMA, property owners can receive a flood insurance quote by entering basic information about their property. After receiving a quote, they can either complete the purchase online or work with an insurance agent.
The website can also connect users with licensed insurance agents in their state.
FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton said the new system is intended to make it easier for property owners to protect themselves from flood losses.
FEMA says the National Flood Insurance Program provides more than $2.2 billion in coverage for over 9,000 Iowa policyholders.
Rock Valley’s Recovery Continues
The announcement comes as Rock Valley continues its recovery from the June 2024 flood.
Earlier this month, the city began demolishing the first home acquired through its flood buyout program, another step in a recovery process that has stretched beyond two years.
In July, FEMA announced more than $22 million in funding to support the acquisition and demolition of 123 residential properties in Rock Valley.
Mayor Kevin Van Otterloo said Small Business Administration loan releases and asbestos removal requirements have affected the pace of demolitions.
At that time, the city was purchasing about five to six properties per week when possible, with future demolition timelines dependent on weather conditions and reimbursement schedules.
