Ireton, Iowa — A hog building was damaged in a fire on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, near Ireton.
According to Ireton Fire Chief Richard Steckelberg, at about 4:10 a.m., the Ireton Fire Department was called to the report of a hog barn on fire at 2583 420th Street, four miles north and two east of Ireton.
When they got there, the chief says the fire department saw lots of smoke. He says they believe the heater malfunctioned and started on fire. Steckelberg says the farmer turned off the propane right away, which limited the damage. He tells us they had to tear some of the ceiling down and remove some of the roof to get at the fire.
Steckelberg says no injuries were reported. He tells us the building was full of baby pigs, but they were all fine.
The fire department was assisted by the Hawarden Fire Department per their auto aid agreement and by the Sioux Center Fire Department.
Chief Steckelberg reports that the damage was fairly minor compared to what it could have been.
He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about two hours.
