Statewide Iowa (RI) — The governor will soon decide whether the 55-mile-an-hour speed limit on two-lane state highways will increase to 60.
The Senate has given final approval to a bill authorizing the change.
Senator Kerry Gruenhagen of Walcott says modern vehicles are well designed for the higher speed.
16 senators opposed the bill. Senator Thomas Townsend of Dubuque says he is concerned about safety.
Current Iowa law says the first two tickets a driver receives in a 12-month period for going 65 on a highway posted at 55 do not lead to a license suspension.
If the governor signs the bill into law, drivers would be able to get two tickets a year for going 70 in a 60‑mile‑an‑hour zone on a two‑lane highway without it affecting their driver’s license or their insurance rates.
