(KIWA Staff Photo)Washington, D.C. (RI) — Senator Chuck Grassley has invited Special Counsel Jack Smith — the attorney who led investigations involving President Trump — to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee next month.
Smith oversaw the investigations into Trump’s actions during the January 6th, 2021 U.S. Capitol riot, as well as the inquiry into classified documents Trump took to his Florida home after leaving the White House. Smith testified before the House Judiciary Committee in January, but Grassley says his committee has gathered far more information since then.
Last month, Grassley said the Justice Department notified him that Smith’s team had secretly obtained messages exchanged between 44 lawmakers — including Grassley — and the White House during the Capitol riot.
Attorneys for Smith sent Grassley a statement saying Smith followed Justice Department policies and looks forward to the correcting what they describe as mischaracterizations of his tenure as special counsel.
Both cases involving Trump were dismissed after the 2024 election.
