Iowa (RI) — Sen. Chuck Grassley says there are a couple of ways legislation requiring automakers to include AM radios in new vehicles could become law before the end of the year.
The AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act cleared the U.S. House last month.
If that effort falls short, Grassley says lawmakers could attach the proposal to legislation that Congress must approve before year’s end.
Grassley and Sen. Joni Ernst are both co-sponsors of the legislation.
A similar bill stalled in congress three years ago after Ford, General Motors, and Toyota raised concerns about the cost of installing AM receivers and argued that electric vehicle motors can interfere with AM radio reception.
Supporters of the legislation say AM radio stations provide critical information during severe weather and other emergency situations.
