Iowa — After nearly seven decades in state and federal office, U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley says he laments the way exchanges in the US Capitol — and in society overall — have devolved. While he blames social media for the downfall of many common courtesies, Grassley remains optimistic things will eventually improve.

Grassley is 93 and has not ruled out running for re-election in 2028. Grassley says Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Truth Social and similar platforms are all contributing to the problem, though Grassley routinely posts comments on X, where he has more than a million followers.

Whether it’s Washington DC or Washington, Iowa, Grassley says it appears more and more people are being less civil toward one another.

Grassley says the emphasis on being mean and vulgar is too prevalent.

Grassley says it’s not coming from Congress, but it’s rising up from the grassroots.
