Washington, D.C. (RI) — Talks are underway in Mexico City to renew the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), and Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says he strongly favors maintaining the trade relationship.
On Monday, President Trump imposed a 50% tariff on a broad range of Canadian goods, including steel, aluminum, copper, and lumber. Trump says the tariff is a response to what he calls Canada’s “unequal treatment” of American imports, including dairy products and vehicles.
During a conference call with Iowa reporters, Grassley was asked about the new tariffs and their potential impact on farmers and the ag economy.
Grassley says the USMCA is vital and should be renewed “as is.”
The White House says the new tariffs on Canada will take effect in 30 days.
