(Sen. Chuck Grassley - KIWA Staff Photo)Iowa (RI) — Sen. Chuck Grassley says former Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation of President Donald Trump involved government outreach and collected financial information from Trump campaign donors, including donation records from Iowans.
During a Senate hearing Tuesday, Grassley said records involving 42 checks from Iowa donors were obtained even though he argued the information was not necessary to Smith’s investigation.
Smith says the subpoenas were issued as part of a serious criminal investigation.
Grassley’s office released copies of nearly 4,800 checks with names and other personal details redacted. Many of the donations were made after the 2020 election.
Grassley also said investigators obtained text messages and other communications involving about 50 journalists and government officials.
The cases Smith filed against Trump involved Trump’s actions surrounding the Jan. 6th, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol and the classified documents Trump took to his Florida residence after leaving office.
Both cases were dismissed after Trump won a second term in the 2024 election.
