Iowa (RI) — Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley says a new farmer bailout program will be an enormous help for farmers facing high diesel prices and rising production costs.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Monday that up to $8 billion will be available through the Harvest Fuel Relief Program in one-time payments to farmers during this harvest season.

USDA officials say the program is designed to bring certainty to farmers as they continue harvesting crops to feed our nation.

Grassley says many farmers would rather earn their income through farming than rely on government assistance.

Grassley also pointed to elements included in last year’s tax bill which he says were crafted specifically to aid producers in Iowa and nationwide.

The Harvest Fuel Relief Program will be administered through the Farm Service Agency. USDA says the first payments for Title I commodities, including corn, soybeans, barley, oats, and wheat, are expected to be distributed in November.
