Sheldon, Iowa — An old van and miscellaneous items were destroyed in a fire on Monday, October 19, 2026, near Sheldon.

According to Sheldon Fire Chief Brad Hindt, at about 5:05 p.m., the Sheldon Fire Company was called to the report of recyclables on fire at 5187 310th Street, about two and a half miles east of the Highway 60 expressway on Highway 18 and then about a mile north.

When they got there, the chief says the fire department saw an old van, scrap iron, tires, and miscellaneous items on fire. He says they used water to fight the fire. A neighbor with a payloader assisted in moving the van and other items so they could extinguish the tires that were on fire.

Hindt says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by the Sanborn Fire Department.

He says they think it started in the old van but otherwise the cause is undetermined.

Chief Hindt reports that the damage amount would consist of the scrap value of items, plus the cost for a new REC power pole.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about an hour and a half.
