Spirit Lake, Iowa (RI) — The city council in Spirit Lake has adopted new regulations governing personal transportation devices such as electric scooters and e-bikes.
Spirit Lake City Administrator and City Attorney Gregg Owens says many Iowa communities have adopted local rules to address issues not clearly covered under state law.
The ordinance, which takes effect later this week, requires anyone under age 15 to wear a helmet while operating an e-bike or electric scooter. It also establishes speed limits for the devices.
The new rules allow e-bikes and electric scooters only on streets with speed limits of 25 miles per hour or less. The devices will not be allowed in city parks.
Owens says regulations on the Dickinson County trail system have also been incorporated into Spirit Lake’s rules for trails located within city limits.
