(KIWA Staff Photo)Iowa (RI) — The Republican National Committee is keeping the Iowa Republican Party’s Caucuses in the lead-off position for the 2028 GOP presidential campaign.
Iowa Republican Party Chairman Jeff Kaufmann spoke to national party leaders before the decision was made late last week.
The Caucuses are a party-run event, and Kaufmann says preparations for the 2028 Iowa Republican Party Caucuses will begin as soon as this November’s election concludes.
Kaufmann led the group that recommended the GOP’s 2028 calendar begin with Iowa’s Caucuses, followed by New Hampshire’s Primary, Nevada’s Caucuses, and South Carolina’s Primary. Any state attempting to move ahead of those four would face sanctions and lose delegates at the 2028 Republican National Convention.
Kaufmann says that even if party leaders had not placed Iowa first, he would have held the Caucuses first anyway — even if it meant losing delegates.
The Iowa Democratic Party lost its first-in-the-nation status in 2024, and the Democratic National Committee has selected six other states to lead the party’s 2028 presidential campaign.
