(Connection of West and East Lake Okoboji - KIWA Staff Photo)Okoboji, Iowa (RI) — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says two people were taken to the hospital after a boat crash around 7 p.m. Saturday on East Okoboji Lake.
According to the DNR, a 42-foot catamaran-style racing boat was operating on the lake when it struck a docket, launched over a boat hoist containing another vessel, came ashore, and then crossed 255th Avenue before stopping.
The operator, 73-year-old Duane VerMeer, and passenger 68-year-old Lisa VerMeer, both of Spirit Lake, were taken to Lakes Regional Health Care and later transferred to Sioux Falls. Their conditions were not available.
State and local officials are investigating, and no charges have been filed.
