(KIWA Staff Photo)Iowa (RI) — Iowa motorists may be rethinking autumn road trips after gasoline prices jumped again this week — and diesel has reached a record high.
AAA Iowa reports the current statewide average is $4.40 for a gallon of gas, up 35 cents since last Friday. Diesel is now averaging $6.19 a gallon, the highest price ever recorded in Iowa. Motor club spokesman Brian Ortner says two major factors are driving the rapid rise.
Ortner says he understands why the sudden spike is frustrating for drivers, especially since prices typically begin falling in September.
In some parts of Iowa, prices rose 25 cents or more overnight on Wednesday. While the statewide average is $4.40, it was $2.99 on this date a year ago. The average diesel price of $6.19 is up from $3.53 a year ago.
AAA says Iowa’s highest gas prices are in Dubuque, while the lowest are in Davenport.
