Iowa (RI) — The Better Business Bureau is warning Iowans about a rising number of fake employment scams, with con artists increasingly targeting college students and young adults searching for work.
BBB spokeswoman Khesha Duncan says scammers often pose as employers and quickly ask for sensitive financial information.
Duncan urges job seekers to research any employer before sharing potential details. She says scammers frequently target young adults because they may have less experience navigating hiring processes.
Many scammers are now using Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram to find victims.
Duncan reminds young adults to guard personal financial information, protect passwords, and get in the habit of shredding financial statements to reduce the risk of identity theft.
