(KIWA Staff Photo)Des Moines, Iowa (RI) — A judge has ruled that two Libertarians selected earlier this month as replacement candidates for lieutenant governor and Iowa’s third congressional district cannot appear on the General Election ballot.
The party nominated the replacements after a state panel ruled the original nominees ineligible due to paper work issues — including one candidate who filed under a stage name rather than his legal name. In the ruling, the judge said the Libertarian Party did not follow the process required under Iowa law when it chose Jake Heard for the third congressional district and Charles Aldrich as the running mate for gubernatorial candidate Nicholas Gluba.
The chair of the Libertarian Party of Iowa told the Des Moines Register the party is reviewing the ruling and whether to appeal to the Iowa Supreme Court.
Libertarian candidates have qualified to run in Iowa’s second congressional district and for Iowa’s U.S. Senate this year.
