(Big Ben Tower in London, England -- KIWA Staff Photo)Iowa (RI) — With the final holiday weekend of summer approaching, many Iowans are preparing to head out of state for short Labor Day getaways — and they’ll be paying more for the trip than they did last year.
Brian Ortner, spokesman for AAA Iowa, says vacation costs have risen in recent months, but they aren’t keeping many Iowans from hitting the road or the runway.
Gasoline prices in Iowa are averaging around $4 a gallon, more than $1 higher than during Labor Day weekend in 2025. Ortner says other travel costs are also up.
AAA says top domestic destinations for the holiday include Seattle and Orlando, while Rome and London lead the list for international travelers. Ortner says there’s also strong demand for Alaska cruises and national park vacations.
